A recent Irish Times article provided an overview of Brasilian DCU Doctorate student – Ms Sheila Castilho. The article mentioned that despite the offer of a scholarship in Spain worth twice as much as one from Ireland, Sheila still chose Ireland as her Study Destination as part of the Science without Borders initiative and ultimately chose Dublin City University (DCU) as her university of choice.
“Ireland. It was an easy decision. Sometimes money isn’t everything,” says the computational linguist, who is now happily ensconced in Dublin City University.
Sheila is part of an unprecedented wave of young Brazilians coming to Ireland in recent years as part of their third-level education. They are drawn to Ireland by instruction in English, Ireland’s membership of Europe and the fact that Irish universities outperform their Brazilian peers in international surveys.
